The Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix has been a cornerstone event at Phillip Island since 1997 and is recognised globally as one of the most iconic races on the MotoGP calendar. Bass Coast Shire Council maintains a strong partnership with the Australian Grand Prix Corporation through a 10-year agreement, currently in place until 2026. With the Victorian Government now negotiating the next contract, critical infrastructure upgrades at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit will be required to secure the event’s long-term future in Victoria. Council is fully supportive of retaining MotoGP on Phillip Island and is calling on the State Government to commit the necessary investment.

This event delivers significant economic and employment benefits for both Bass Coast and Victoria. The 2023 Ernst & Young economic impact study found the Grand Prix generated $54.6 million in economic benefit for the State, including $29.4 million in direct local spend within Bass Coast. The event also supports 284 full-time equivalent jobs and attracted more than 71,000 attendees in 2023. A long-term contract extension will ensure that these benefits continue to flow to regional communities, local businesses, and the broader Victorian economy.
